5 Apps for the Perfect Picnic

by brian cody

An inkling of sunshine on any given afternoon and the UK population takes to the streets, doesn’t really matter whether it’s cold or not, anything more than an hour of sustained sun and the barbecues are blazing like the beacons of Gondor. Here’s five apps that should help in your struggle to organise that most fabled of events… a successful picnic.

Platform: IOS
Perfect For: The BBQ enthusiast

Tired of burnt sausages and black bacon? This nifty little app allows you to select the type of food you’re intending to cook, the thickness of the cut and then gives you a notification when it’s time to flip the contents of the grill! Works particularly well with compatible smartwatches.

Platform: IOS, Android
Perfect For: Chasing the Sun

One minute the sky is so blue you think you could be in Malaga, the next everything is grey, it’s lashing it down and you’ve remembered you’re actually in Manchester. Accuweather will allow the user to pick the (near enough) perfect afternoon and warn them of any incoming showers with the potential to rain on their parade.

Platform: IOS, Android
Perfect For: Picking the correct wine for that perfectly cooked steak

Perhaps you prefer beer but you’ve been tasked with buying the wine, maybe you need a sumptuous red but you don’t know the difference between Merlot and Malbec? No worries, head to the supermarket with confidence, take a picture of the wine label and Vivino will provide you with tasting notes, user reviews, an average rating and an average price so you can even shop around.

National Trust App
Platform: IOS, Android
Perfect For: Knowing where to go

We may not be the biggest of isles, but there is certainly plenty of natural beauty to be found and the National Trust App can help you ascertain some of the prettiest spots for your picnic. It also has a handy “What’s On” section detailing current and upcoming events at National Trust sites across the UK.

Around Me
Platform: IOS, Android
Perfect for: Preparing for every eventuality

When the rain does pour down or the wine does run dry, finding the nearest place of refuge is always useful, this app pinpoints your location and allows you to search for the nearest amenities suited to your purpose.

Best of luck! Oh, and don’t forget the umbrella.
